Chapter One — His Silence
"Sometimes, the loudest cries are hidden behind the quietest people
The alarm on Kian's phone never got the chance to ring.
At exactly 5:47 a.m., his eyes opened on their own, just as they had every single morning for the past two years. There was no panic, no nightmare, no sudden movement. He simply stared at the ceiling, expressionless, as if waking up had become another responsibility rather than a blessing.
The room around him reflected the life he had slowly built after losing everything.
Neat.
Organized.
Colorless.
The curtains were only half-open, allowing the pale morning light to spill across the wooden floor. A bookshelf stood beside the window, filled with novels that looked untouched. A small desk rested against the opposite wall, holding a closed laptop, a coffee mug from the previous night, and a tiny green plant that somehow continued to survive despite the silence surrounding it.
Nothing in the room was out of place.
Nothing except the old cardboard box tucked beneath his bed.
It had remained there for exactly two years.
He never opened it.
He never threw it away either.
Kian slowly sat up, running a hand through his messy black hair before reaching for the glass of water on the bedside table. It was already warm, untouched since last night. He took a sip anyway.
Outside, the city was beginning to wake.
Somewhere nearby, a temple bell echoed through the quiet streets.
A milkman parked his bicycle outside the apartment building.
Someone laughed.
Someone argued.
Someone started another ordinary day.
Kian listened to every sound through the open window.
Life had never stopped moving.
Only his had.
He stood up, walked toward the bathroom, and looked at himself in the mirror.
Dark circles.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked older than twenty-six.
He couldn't remember the last time he had smiled without forcing it.
He splashed cold water across his face and whispered the same sentence he had whispered every morning.
"Just get through today."
No motivation.
No hope.
Just survival.
The kitchen smelled faintly of coffee.
Kian placed the kettle on the stove while the silence inside the apartment wrapped itself around him like an old habit. He lived alone now, yet every corner of the house carried memories of conversations that no longer existed.
He poured hot water into a mug and watched the coffee slowly dissolve.
His breakfast remained untouched.
Just like every other morning.
His phone suddenly vibrated on the counter.
Mom Calling...
He closed his eyes for a second before answering.
"Good morning, Mom."
"Good morning, beta," her gentle voice replied. "You're awake already?"
"I've been up for a while."
"I knew it."
A small silence followed.
"Maa..."
"Hmm?"
"You don't have to worry about me every morning."
A soft chuckle escaped her lips.
"If mothers stopped worrying, the world would become very quiet."
For a brief moment...
Kian almost smiled.
Almost.
"Did you eat breakfast?" she asked.
"I'm making coffee."
"Kian."
"I'll eat later."
"You said that yesterday."
"And the day before."
Another silence.
His mother didn't scold him.
She knew there were battles she couldn't fight for him.
"Are you coming home this weekend?" she asked carefully.
"I'll try."
"You always say you'll try."
"I know."
"I miss you."
Kian lowered his eyes.
"I miss you too."
She wanted to ask another question.
She wanted to ask if he had slept.
If he still visited that old bookstore.
If he had finally packed away the memories he refused to touch.
Instead...
She asked the only question she asked every day.
"Are you okay?"
Kian looked out of the kitchen window.
The sky was covered with grey clouds.
Rain was coming.
"So far..."
he answered quietly,
"I'm still here."
His mother understood exactly what he meant.
Sometimes surviving was the only answer a broken heart could give.
After ending the call, Kian stood in the kitchen for several minutes, holding the now-cold mug in his hands.
Coffee had become a strange habit.
He never drank it while it was hot.
Just like life...
he was always a little too late.
He locked the apartment and walked toward the elevator.
The old security guard downstairs smiled warmly.
"Good morning, sir."
"Morning."
"You leave early every day."
Kian nodded politely.
"Habit."
The old man laughed.
"Good habits are rare these days."
Kian didn't answer.
As he stepped outside, a cool breeze brushed against his face.
The air smelled of rain.
People hurried past him, lost in their own routines.
Children waited for their school bus, laughing over something that seemed incredibly important.
An elderly couple shared one umbrella despite the weather still being dry.
Kian watched them for a second.
There was something beautiful about people who still chose each other after so many years.
He wondered if forever had ever really existed...
or if it was simply a word people invented before learning what goodbye felt like.
He slipped both hands into the pockets of his black coat and continued walking toward the metro station.
The city was awake.
His heart wasn't.

Chapter 2: The Girl Who Spoke Too Much
Kian held the old bookmark between his fingers.
"Some people leave… but their silence stays forever."
Those words were not just a quote.
They were a memory.
A memory he had buried deep inside himself for years.
As he stepped out of the bookstore, his eyes fell on a girl standing outside, trying to protect herself from the falling rain.
Yet, somehow, she was still smiling.
"Excuse me… I think this is yours."
Kian extended the bookmark towards her.
The girl looked at it with surprise.
"This? No… it isn't mine."
"Then how do you know who it belongs to?" Kian asked.
She smiled slightly.
"Because the way you were looking at it… it felt like it wasn't just a piece of paper. It looked like someone's entire story."
Kian didn't reply.
He just looked at her.
After years, someone had tried to understand his silence.
"By the way… I'm Mira."
Kian stayed quiet.
Mira tilted her head and said,
"Are you always this quiet, or is today a special occasion?"
For a moment…
A small smile appeared on Kian's face.
A smile he didn't even notice himself.
"Kian."
"Okay… Mr. Silence. Nice to meet you."
For the first time in a long while, Kian felt something he had forgotten existed.
Maybe some people don't come back into your life…
Maybe new people arrive to break the silence left behind by the old ones.
But Kian didn't know…
Mira's arrival wasn't just a new beginning.
It was the key to a door holding a secret from his past.

Chapter Three — The Girl Beside the Window
"Sometimes, destiny doesn't knock. It quietly takes the seat beside you."
The first day of college carried the kind of excitement most students waited months for.
The campus buzzed with laughter, introductions, and the sound of friendships being born. Some students clicked endless photos while others searched nervously for their classrooms.
Kian walked through it all without looking at anyone.
His hands rested in his pockets, his earphones stayed in, and his expression remained unreadable.
To everyone else, it was the beginning of a new chapter.
To him...
It was simply another day.
The classroom was already half full when Kian entered.
Without saying a word, he walked to the last row near the window and sat down.
It was always the same.
The last bench.
The window.
The silence.
A few students glanced at him, whispering among themselves.
"He's probably one of those arrogant guys."
"He hasn't spoken to anyone."
Kian heard them.
He simply didn't care.
A few minutes later, the classroom door opened once again.
A girl stepped inside, slightly out of breath.
She held a notebook tightly against her chest as she apologized to the professor.
"I'm so sorry, sir. I got lost while looking for the classroom."
The class laughed softly.
The professor smiled.
"It's alright. Find an empty seat."
She looked around.
Every chair was occupied.
Except one.
The seat beside Kian.
For a brief moment, she hesitated.
Then, taking a deep breath, she walked toward him.
Stopping beside his desk, she offered a gentle smile.
"Excuse me... is this seat taken?"
Kian looked up.
Their eyes met for the first time.
He quietly picked up his bag from the chair and placed it on the floor.
That was his answer.
She smiled.
"Thank you."
She sat down.
A few minutes passed in complete silence.
Unable to resist, she leaned slightly toward him.
"Hi... I'm Mira."
No response.
She waited.
Nothing.
She chuckled quietly.
"You're really not into introductions, are you?"
Kian continued looking at the board as if he hadn't heard a single word.
Instead of feeling awkward...
Mira simply smiled.
There was something about his silence that didn't feel rude.
It felt... heavy.
As if he had forgotten what conversations were supposed to sound like.
The lecture continued.
The professor explained the first lesson while students hurried to take notes.
Mira searched through her bag.
Her face changed instantly.
"Oh no..."
She had forgotten her pen.
She looked around, hoping someone would notice.
Before she could ask anyone...
A black pen slid across her desk.
She looked up.
Kian had placed it there without saying a word.
"You can use it."
Those were the first words she had heard from him.
His voice was calm.
Soft.
Almost distant.
A small smile appeared on Mira's face.
"Thank you."
He gave a slight nod and looked back toward the board.
No more words followed.
Yet somehow...
That tiny moment felt strangely unforgettable.
When the final bell rang, students rushed outside, filling the corridors with excitement.
Mira stood up, holding the pen carefully.
She walked toward Kian.
"I almost forgot..."
She held the pen out to him.
"Thank you again."
He accepted it.
"Keep it."
She blinked.
"What?"
"You'll probably forget yours again."
For the first time...
The corner of Mira's lips curved into a genuine smile.
"So... you do talk."
Kian didn't answer.
He simply walked away.
Mira watched him disappear into the crowded hallway.
There was something different about him.
He wasn't cold.
He wasn't arrogant.
He was just...
Carrying a silence that seemed far too heavy for someone his age.
And without realizing it...
She had already become curious about the boy who never smiled.

Chapter Four — A Name Worth Remembering
"Some people ask questions because they're curious. Others ask because they care."
The next morning arrived with soft clouds covering the sky.
Students hurried across the campus, coffee cups in hand, laughing as if they had known each other for years.
Kian walked through the same gates with the same expression.
Silent.
Calm.
Untouchable.
As he entered the classroom, he noticed someone already sitting on the last bench near the window.
Mira.
She looked up and smiled.
"I saved your seat."
Kian paused for a second before quietly sitting beside her.
"...Thanks."
It was only one word.
But for Mira, it was progress.
"You actually remembered manners," she teased.
A tiny smile almost appeared on Kian's face.
Almost.
The lecture began.
Halfway through, the professor announced a surprise activity.
"I want everyone to work in pairs and prepare a short presentation by next week."
The classroom immediately filled with excitement.
Friends quickly formed groups.
Within seconds, almost everyone had found a partner.
Except...
Kian.
And Mira.
The professor looked at them.
"You two can work together."
Mira smiled.
"Looks like destiny has already decided."
Kian simply nodded.
After class, they walked toward the library.
Neither of them spoke for the first few minutes.
Finally, Mira broke the silence.
"So..."
"What?"
"You know my name."
"Yes."
"But I still don't know yours."
He looked ahead.
"Kian."
She repeated it softly.
"Kian."
"It suits you."
He looked at her with a puzzled expression.
"Can a name suit someone?"
She laughed.
"I think so."
"It sounds calm."
"Just like you."
He didn't know how to answer that.
No one had ever described him like that before.
They found a quiet corner inside the library.
Books surrounded them from every side.
Mira opened her notebook.
"So... presentation first."
Kian nodded.
For nearly an hour, they worked without wasting a single minute.
Mira noticed something surprising.
Kian wasn't just intelligent.
He explained difficult concepts so simply that they became easy to understand.
"You should talk more."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because people would realize how amazing you are."
For the first time in years...
Kian didn't immediately look away.
Instead...
He quietly asked,
"What if I don't want them to know?"
The smile on Mira's face slowly faded.
She realized that his silence wasn't a choice.
It was a shield.
And shields are built only after someone gets hurt.
She didn't ask another question.
Not because she wasn't curious.
But because she respected the pain she couldn't yet see.
As they packed their bags, rain began tapping against the library windows.
Students rushed outside, trying to avoid getting wet.
Mira stood near the entrance and looked at the rain.
"I forgot my umbrella."
Kian opened his bag.
Without saying a word, he pulled out a black umbrella.
He held it toward her.
"We can share."
She smiled.
"Only if you promise not to stay silent the whole way."
Kian looked at the falling rain...
Then at Mira.
For the first time...
The smallest, almost invisible smile appeared on his face.
It disappeared within a second.
But Mira saw it.
And somehow...
That tiny smile felt like the beginning of a story neither of them was ready to understand.

Chapter Five — The Smile That Didn't Last
"The strongest people aren't the ones who never break... they're the ones who hide the cracks the best."
The rain had stopped by the time Kian and Mira reached the college gate.
They walked under the same umbrella, leaving enough space between them for silence to exist.
Neither of them felt the need to fill it.
For the first time in years...
Kian didn't mind having someone beside him.
---
The next few days passed quietly.
Their presentation slowly came together.
Mira talked.
Kian listened.
Sometimes he answered with only a word.
Sometimes with a sentence.
To anyone else, it wasn't much.
But to Mira...
Every word felt like progress.
She had learned something important.
Kian wasn't unfriendly.
He simply spoke only when his words truly mattered.
---
One afternoon, the canteen was unusually crowded.
Mira stood in line while Kian waited near a window.
A group of boys nearby noticed him.
"Look, it's Mr. Silent."
"I've never seen anyone smile so little."
"Maybe he doesn't even know how."
The group laughed.
Kian heard every word.
His expression didn't change.
He quietly turned to leave.
Before he could take another step...
Mira called out,
"Kian!"
He stopped.
She walked over holding two cups of coffee.
"I accidentally bought an extra one."
She smiled.
"I guess you'll have to help me finish it."
He looked at the cup.
Then at her.
"I don't drink coffee."
"Oh..."
She laughed awkwardly.
"Then I'll drink both."
For the first time...
A faint smile appeared on Kian's face.
"So much for your brilliant plan."
Mira stared at him in surprise.
"You smiled."
"It wasn't a smile."
"It definitely was."
"It wasn't."
"It was."
The two of them argued quietly until both of them started laughing.
The boys who had mocked him looked away.
Without realizing it...
Mira had protected him.
Without making it obvious.
---
Later that evening, Kian reached home.
The house was silent.
Just as always.
He placed his bag on the floor and walked into his room.
On the study table sat an old wooden photo frame.
A family picture.
A younger Kian stood in the middle...
Smiling.
A smile that no longer existed.
He picked up the frame carefully.
His fingers brushed away the thin layer of dust.
For a long moment...
He simply stared at it.
His eyes slowly filled with emotions he refused to let escape.
A soft knock broke the silence.
His grandmother opened the door slightly.
"You're home."
Kian nodded.
She looked at the photo in his hands.
"You smiled today... didn't you?"
He froze.
"How did you know?"
She smiled gently.
"A grandmother always knows."
For the first time in a very long time...
Kian didn't deny it.
He quietly placed the frame back on the table.
Outside, the evening sky turned orange.
Inside...
The walls around his heart had begun to crack.
Very slowly.
Very quietly.
Because of one girl...
Who never stopped smiling.

Chapter Six — The Boy Behind the Silence
"Sometimes, the quietest hearts carry the loudest storms."
Monday morning arrived with a cool breeze after two days of rain.
The college campus felt alive once again.
Students hurried toward their classrooms while the smell of wet earth lingered in the air.
Mira walked through the gates with a cup of coffee in one hand and a notebook in the other.
As she entered the classroom, her eyes searched for the last bench near the window.
Empty.
She frowned.
Kian was never late.
Not even once.
---
The first lecture ended.
Still no sign of him.
Mira tried to convince herself that it wasn't a big deal.
Maybe he was sick.
Maybe he had some work.
But a strange feeling settled in her chest.
For someone who barely spoke...
His absence felt unusually loud.
---
The next day...
His seat remained empty again.
This time, even the professor noticed.
"Has anyone heard from Kian?"
The classroom fell silent.
No one knew.
No one had ever bothered to know.
Mira quietly lowered her eyes.
She realized something painful.
No one noticed Kian when he was present...
And now that he was missing...
Almost no one cared.
---
That afternoon, she walked to the college library alone.
As she searched for a reference book, an old register slipped from the shelf.
A folded paper fell onto the floor.
She picked it up.
It wasn't meant for her.
It was an old inter-college debate certificate.
First Prize — Kian Malhotra
She stared at it in disbelief.
A debate competition?
The same Kian who barely spoke?
The librarian noticed the paper in her hands and smiled softly.
"You know him?"
Mira nodded.
"A little."
The librarian looked thoughtful.
"He wasn't always so quiet."
"He used to be one of the brightest students... always smiling, always helping others."
Mira listened without saying a word.
"What happened?"
The librarian sighed.
"Sometimes life changes people faster than time does."
He didn't say anything more.
But those few words stayed with her.
---
On the third day...
Kian finally returned.
He entered the classroom just before the lecture began.
His face looked tired.
There were dark circles beneath his eyes.
He quietly took his usual seat.
Mira waited until the class ended.
Then she walked over.
"Where were you?"
There was no reply.
"Were you sick?"
Kian looked away.
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
A long silence followed.
Finally...
He spoke.
"My grandmother wasn't well."
Mira's expression softened instantly.
"Is she okay now?"
He nodded.
"She's better."
"I'm glad."
For a moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Then Mira smiled gently.
"I was worried."
Kian looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because..."
She hesitated.
"...friends worry about each other."
The word echoed inside his mind.
Friends.
He had almost forgotten what that word felt like.
A faint warmth spread through his heart.
Something he hadn't felt in years.
As they walked out of the classroom together, Kian glanced at Mira.
"Thank you..."
She looked at him, surprised.
"For what?"
"For waiting."
Mira smiled.
"I'll always save the window seat."
For the first time...
Kian believed her.
And somewhere deep inside...
The lonely boy behind the silence took one small step toward trusting someone again.

Chapter Seven — The Letter Never Sent
"Not every goodbye is spoken. Some are written... and never delivered."
The days that followed became quieter in a different way.
Kian still spoke very little.
But now...
His silence no longer felt empty.
Mira had somehow learned to understand it.
A small nod meant yes.
A slight shake of his head meant no.
And the faintest smile...
Meant he was trying.
---
One afternoon, their professor announced that the library would close early for maintenance.
Students packed their bags and hurried out.
Mira stretched her arms.
"Finally! My brain can't handle another page today."
Kian looked at her.
"It handled three hundred yesterday."
She gasped dramatically.
"So you do pay attention."
He looked away.
"I notice things."
Mira smiled to herself.
Maybe Kian wasn't changing.
Maybe he was simply allowing someone to see the real him.
---
As they walked through the old library corridor, a sudden gust of wind blew several papers off a nearby table.
Sheets scattered across the floor.
Without thinking, both of them bent down to collect them.
One folded envelope slipped beneath Kian's hand.
It was old.
Its edges had turned pale with time.
Across the front, only two words were written.
"To Mom."
Kian froze.
His fingers trembled.
The handwriting...
Was his own.
Mira noticed the sudden change in his expression.
"Kian...?"
He didn't answer.
Very carefully, he opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The ink had faded slightly.
He silently read the first line.
«"Mom... today I smiled because you told me life always gets better."»
His breathing became uneven.
Mira didn't ask what was written.
She simply stood beside him.
Quietly.
Respecting his silence.
After a long moment, Kian folded the letter again.
"I wrote this years ago."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"But I never gave it to her."
Mira looked at him gently.
"Why?"
He stared out of the library window.
"Because..."
"...she was gone before I could."
Silence filled the corridor.
The world outside continued as normal.
Students laughed.
Birds sang.
The wind moved through the trees.
But for Kian...
Time had stopped.
---
Mira didn't know what words could heal a wound like that.
So she didn't try.
Instead...
She stepped closer and softly said,
"You don't have to carry every memory alone."
Kian closed his eyes.
For years...
He had hidden every tear.
Every regret.
Every unanswered question.
Yet today...
For the first time...
Someone had stayed beside him without asking him to be stronger.
He looked at Mira.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
"You don't have to thank me."
"Friends stay."
---
As they walked out of the library together, the evening sky glowed with shades of gold and orange.
Kian slipped the old letter carefully into his notebook.
He wasn't ready to let go of the past.
But maybe...
He was finally ready to stop running from it.
And Mira...
Without even realizing it...
Had become the first person to help him take that step.

Chapter Eight — Echoes of Us
"Some people don't fix your broken heart. They simply remind you that it's still capable of beating."
A week had passed since Kian found the letter.
He never mentioned it again.
Mira never asked.
Some memories deserved silence more than questions.
Yet something had changed.
Kian had started greeting her every morning.
A quiet...
"Good morning, Mira."
Two simple words.
But to Mira, they meant more than grand speeches ever could.
---
The day of their presentation finally arrived.
The classroom buzzed with nervous energy as each pair walked to the front one after another.
Mira glanced at Kian.
"You'll speak too, right?"
He looked at the floor.
"I don't know."
"You can."
"I haven't stood in front of people for years."
She smiled reassuringly.
"You won't be alone."
When their names were called, they walked to the front together.
Mira began confidently.
After a few minutes, she looked at Kian.
"Would you like to explain the next part?"
The classroom fell silent.
Every eye turned toward him.
For a moment...
The old fear returned.
The memories.
The pain.
The loneliness.
He wanted to step back.
Then he looked at Mira.
She didn't say a word.
She simply smiled.
The same smile that had slowly pulled him out of the darkness.
Kian took a deep breath.
And began to speak.
At first, his voice was barely audible.
Then...
Sentence after sentence...
His confidence returned.
The classroom listened without interruption.
When the presentation ended...
The room erupted into applause.
Not because it was perfect.
But because everyone had witnessed something extraordinary.
The boy who never spoke...
Had finally found his voice again.
---
After class, the professor stopped them near the door.
"You both did an excellent job."
Then he looked at Kian.
"I'm glad to see you smiling again."
Kian stood quietly for a moment.
Then he smiled.
A real smile.
Not forced.
Not hidden.
Real.
Mira couldn't help smiling too.
---
That evening, they sat on the college terrace as the sun slowly disappeared behind the hills.
A cool breeze drifted between them.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
Finally, Kian broke the silence.
"You know..."
"You were wrong."
Mira frowned.
"About what?"
"You said I saved your seat."
She looked confused.
"I did."
He shook his head gently.
"No."
"You saved something much more important."
She waited.
"My hope."
Mira's eyes filled with tears.
Not of sadness.
But of happiness.
She smiled through them.
"And you reminded me..."
"...that even the quietest hearts deserve to be heard."
The evening sky turned shades of orange, pink, and blue.
Two strangers who had once shared nothing more than a classroom...
Now shared something far greater.
A friendship built on trust.
On patience.
On healing.
And on the silent echoes they had unknowingly left in each other's lives.
Sometimes...
The greatest love stories don't begin with "I love you."
They begin with...
"I'm here."
